そうか。ミルクが出てくるのか。。水ではないのね。
日本語の感覚で慣用句を直訳しようとすると、全く意味のつうじない言葉になってしまう可能性があるので注意しましょう！
ちなみに、「水」に関係する慣用句をいくつかご紹介しておきますね。
- Water under the bridge:
- 意味: 過去の出来事や問題はもう変えられないこと。
- 例: “Our argument from last week is water under the bridge now.”
- Keep (one’s) head above water:
- 意味: 困難な状況で必死に立ち向かうこと。
- 例: “With all the bills piling up, it’s hard to keep our heads above water.”
- In hot water:
- 意味: 困難な状況にある。
- 例: “He got caught cheating on the exam and is now in hot water with the teacher.”
- Like a fish out of water:
- 意味: 新しい環境や状況で不快感を感じること。
- 例: “Moving to a new country made her feel like a fish out of water.”
- Blood is thicker than water:
- 意味: 家族の絆は他の人々よりも強い。
- 例: “Even though they fight a lot, they’ll always support each other. Blood is thicker than water.”
- Pour cold water on something:
- 意味: あるアイデアや計画を否定すること。
- 例: “When I suggested a road trip, she poured cold water on the idea, saying it was too expensive.”
